The Sportsman Bar, Beerhouses, Huddersfield

The Sportsman combines heritage (built in 1930 as an ‘improved pub’) and modernity (at the forefront of the real cider movement and the creator of the Huddersfield International Crisp Festival!).

Beerhouses took over The Sportsman in 2009 and we set about restoring its Art Deco beauty, winning an English Heritage Pub Design Award in 2010 and being granted Grade II Listed status shortly after. It retains many original features and is renowned for its distinctive curved wooden bar. The gents’ toilets are a joy to behold – probably not a statement you can make about many men’s loos in a pub 😬 – with original urinals and tiles depicting 5 popular sports of the day. We also have a beautiful beer garden, which we have dubbed The Hanging Gardens of Huddersfield, so we strongly recommend that you make the most of every droplet of sunshine that Huddersfield gets by coming and sitting in it!

We’ve graced the pages of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide since 2012 and are proud winners of Huddersfield CAMRA’s Cider Pub of the Year for several years running. Of course, as you would expect from a Beerhouses pub, we also offer an excellent range of cask ales as well as a weekly Dram Club, celebrating featured whiskies.

We’re known for our tasting events and manager, John Fletcher, is also known as an Honourable Knight of The Brotherhood of the Pink Elephant, as designated by Huyghe Brewery due to his exceptional conditioning of Delirium beers on the bar. It’s what he insists his friends call him.

Food at The Sportsman

We offer a range of bar snacks, including hot pork scratchings and a wide variety of crisps and nuts. You can also order food from Big Joe’s next door via the hatch in the beer garden to eat in the pub.

OUR CHOSEN CHARITIES

Our nominated charity is Project Youth Cancer, whose mission it is to change the way that young people experience cancer. In 2024, we set ourselves a huge target to raise at least £6000 for the charity and a huge target requires a huge challenge. Working with Huddersfield brewers, Magic Rock Brewing, we created the Yorkshire 3 Pints Challenge, which involved carrying 3 barrels up and down the Yorkshire 3 Peaks. This event, and several other fundraising activities resulted in us raising £6600. You can see more information here.

⚠ Sexy new beer on the bar alert ⚠

Mount St. Bernard Abbey Trappist Brewery had a phenomenal 2024 creating one of the beers of the year in collaboration with La Trappe and Zundert. And since then we've had a queue of customers asking us for more from this fantastic brewery, this time we've opted for their blond 😍

This English Trappist Blond is light and bittersweet in a classic English style, with lemon zest on the nose, followed by hints of orange, vanilla, and sherbet. It's made with the same ingredients as the original Tynt Meadow, however, it offers a lighter, more zesty twist on the original.

Available now at your favourite local pub! See you soon 🍻

The sad demise of Magic Rock has started us thinking, which beer of recent years do you miss the most?
I'll start....Summer Wine Diablo was a stunning beer from a cracking local brewery and I'd love to have just one more pint!
What now defunct beers would you love to be drinking tonight?

Summer Wine did an imperial stout called Callico Jack that was finished in rum barrels. It was amazing.

Rapture - Don't know why Magic Rock stopped brewing it.

Magic Rock did a rum & raisin dark arts which was delish. I also loved their common grounds coffee porter.
