The Sportsman Beerhouse
The Sportsman takes the classic British Boozer and brings it bang up to date.
With its beautiful Art Deco interior we’ve restored the original feature to their former glory. We won English Heritage Pub Design Awards in 2010.
A great pub needs great beer and The Sportsman clearly delivers on this count. Rotating cask & craft taps bring you the best there is in UK & world beers, fantastic real ciders and a fridge bursting at the seams with top class Belgian beers deliver what you’d expect and that’s before you start on the cellar aged specials and some of the 50+ whiskies.
The Sportsman is the CAMRA Huddersfield Cider Pub of the Year 2024 (for the third year running)!

So yesterday, we spoke about the first half of the Best of British Cider Bottle Club covering the traditionalist's views on what cider should be. Today we're looking at the second half of the bottle club list, the non-traditional "new wave" cider that has broken free from the shackles of geography-based profiles and, as a result, is producing some really exciting, quirky ciders!
Little Pomona Hard Rain Perry-Quette: A lot of the time in the beverage industry, when it comes to innovation, it isn't usually a case of creating something completely new, a lot of the time it's a rediscovery of an old style and then putting a modern twist on it. We see it all the time with beer, the new wave of sour beer taking inspiration from early Flanders brewing, Cold IPA's taking inspiration to a certain degree from Kolsch beer from Cologne. And Little Pomona here have taken the historic and forgotten perrykin/piquette style and put a spotlight on it again! 3 grape varieties and 2 French pear varieties co-fermented spontaneously and bottled as a pet nat results in a unique blue/green colour and a super tropical, herby and crushable drink. And the big surprise? It's only 3.2%!
Nightingale Fledgling Number 2: Next up we have single variety cider made with red love apples, a unique red-fleshed apple grown at Gibbet Oak Farm. This is a cider that without doubt targets the wine drinking demographic and this is evident in the dry acidic profile.
Thornborough Brut Cider: And finally, we have a Methode Traditionelle cider from Thornborough again targeting a demographic outside of the typical cider drinking demographic, this time, targeting the Champagne market. Pressed in small batches and containing a blend of locally sourced Yorkshire dessert apples juiced at peak ripeness. Aged for 1 year with a final bottle fermentation, blended with SV Dabinett cider for a good balance... the result, a crisp sparkling and unique cider!
The event is TOMORROW AT 8PM and there are still tickets available! Book your spot below:

"Thursday"
Noun.
Definition: Thursday is the day of the week that is pretty much the weekend. Nobody expects you to work hard on Friday so you may as well drink some quality whisky on Thursday night 👌
Used in a sentence: "I went to The Sportsman on Thursday because it's DRAM CLUB DAY!!!"
That's right folks, it's dram club day and what a whiskey we have for you all today, Noah's Mill Kentucky Straight Bourbon. It's super hard to find which is a shame because it's exceptional... But we have some 👀
Noah's Mill is a bourbon produced in Bardstown, Kentucky by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers. First released in the mid 1990's by Willett Distillery as part of their Small Batch Boutique Collection. The bourbon was originally aged in charred oak barrels until mature at 15 years old, however the current bottles contain no age statement. It is bottled by hand at 57.15% abv. The blend of bourbons used are said to be aged between four and 20 years.
Was £5.75/8.50... NOW £5.25/8.00!!! See you soon! 🥃

If you've attended any of the previous bottle clubs, you'll know that we love to tell a story throughout the event. And the Best of British Cider Event is no different! So for this event, we've split the selections into 2 halves: the traditionalists cider and the new wave of cider. First up, the traditionalists cider!
Pilton Keeved Cider: Despite this being the Best of British Cider, we also wanted to showcase a style more well known and popular across the channel in Normandy, keeving. Luckily for us, Pilton, based in Somerset, produce some fantastic keeved cider. On the evening we'll go into detail a bit more about the keeving process but essentially, it's a process that usually results in a lower alcohol content and retention of residual sweetness. A real crushable, easy drinking cider to start the evening off!
Ross-on-Wye Ball's Bittersweet Cider: Next up we stay with a West Country Cidery but with this cider we're really demonstrating what a West Country cider really is! This isn't taking inspiration or techniques from across the channel, this is everything you'd expect from a west country cider. It's heavy on the tannins, low on the acidity, smooth, fruity and very dry.
Nightingale Kentish Perry: And finally, we head across to the East Country but this one comes with a twist... it's not a cider! It's a perry, however, it still has that classic East Country profile, we still get the relatively low tannins, the high acidity and a real fresh fruitiness bursting through. It's made from a blend of Comice, Conference and Concorde dessert pears and topped off with some Bramley apple juice and what it results in is a real battle in your mouth! You've got that soft, sweet, floral pear battling it out with the crisp and tangy Bramley apple. A complex perry and an absolute stunner! 🍎

The Sportsman is BLOOMING great pub! 🤣🤣🤣
Get it?
