What can we say about Stalybridge Buffet Bar? Is it a pub? Is it a museum? Is it a resting place for weary travellers passing through the railway station? Of course, it’s all of these things and more.
It’s one of the few remaining original Victorian buffet bars and still boasts a marble bar top. Fun fact: the local Environmental Health department actually insisted the bar should be ripped out and replaced with Formica for hygiene reasons back in the ‘70s but were duly overwhelmed by the indignant response from the owners and locals and the (perfectly hygienic) marble bar was given a reprieve and lives on to this day!
The walls are adorned with a myriad of railway memorabilia and there are plenty of original features to keep you fascinated throughout your visit (you may require several visits to really take them all in!). No wonder it’s so popular with Ale Trailers, who often take in our other railway pub, The West Riding at Dewsbury too.
In fact, there wouldn’t be a West Riding without a Stalybridge Buffet Bar. Mike Field was inspired to create a railway pub at Dewsbury because he had spent so much time at the Buffet Bar as a student, and the whole project was something of a homage to it. We originally wanted to bring the Buffet Bar into the Beerhouses family in 1996 but lost out to John Hesketh. John and Mike stayed in touch over the years and when John, sadly, became seriously ill, he expressed his wishes that Mike should take it on after his death, which he did in 2012. There is definite poetry in this story for us that we were able to bring the two pubs together and ‘book end’ the Ale Trail line in this way.
Of course, being a Beerhouses pub, it has substance as well as style, with a great choice of cask ale on the bar. It has featured continuously in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide since 1999 and won many awards over the years. Just minutes out of Manchester on the train, we passionately believe that we can match any beer you’ll find in the city for quality – at town prices of course!

At the Buffet Bar we believe that everyone should be able to experience the joys that being able to drink a delicious hand-pulled cask beer can bring, and that's why we have a permanent rotating Gluten Free cask line serving up some great beers.
But this week we are upping our GF game by having a full-on tap takeover of gluten free beers across cask & keg featuring the likes of @brasscastlebeer @abbeydalebeers @binibrew @triplepointbrew @bristolbeerfactory @brightsidebeer and others. The picture is just a sneak peak of what we have coming up from Thursday 14th May until they run-off.
To be classed as GF, these beers must measure less than 20 parts per million of gluten. Many brewers have now mastered the art of breaking down or removing the gluten proteins in beer so that anyone with Coeliac disease of dietary requirements or intolerances can drink delicious beer without compromising on body or taste and that is something to be celebrated.
So come down to the Buffet Bar from Thursday to try what we have on offer whether you are on a GF diet or not these beers are guaranteed to be superb.
