Charity challenge sees two icons of the Huddersfield beer scene take on the Three Peaks while carrying 108 pints of beer!
All Beerhouses pubs have designated charities, and they work hard all year round to raise money for them. The Sportsman has supported Project Youth Cancer (formerly Laura Crane Trust) for 10 years now. This year, The Sportsman is celebrating 15 years of being a Beerhouses pub so we really felt we should do something big to mark the occasion, as well as raise a huge sum of money for this worthy charity. Ryan Robinson, the assistant manager at The Sportsman was tasked with organising a challenge for staff and friends to participate in.
Not just Three Peaks; Three Peaks with pints!
Obviously, the endeavour had to be challenging and although walking the Yorkshire Three Peaks – Ingleborough, Pen-y-Ghent, and Whernside – is pretty demanding, Ryan felt that it was still a bit too easy for this special birthday year of fundraising.
So, what’s harder than walking the Three Peaks? How about walking it carrying casks of beer? That’s right, we’re taking pints to the Peaks!
The plan is for 3 teams to complete the Three Peaks while each also carrying a cask of beer on 9th April. Each cask is the equivalent of 36 pints so that’s 108 pints in total. We’re not doing it alone either. If we’re carrying beer, we thought we should really rope in a brewery! Luckily, our friends at Magic Rock Brewing, just down the road, were more than happy to embrace the challenge with us. Ryan is pictured above, along with Hanna Reilly-Stafford and Dave Lavy from Magic Rock.
A special challenge requires special beer
We couldn’t undertake this event with just any old beer, could we? After all, The Sportsman is renowned for its quality beer offering and with Magic Rock on board, we really needed to bring something ‘proper’. We will, therefore, be completing the climbs with 3 specially brewed Sportsman/Magic Rock collaboration beers.
On completion, the beers will make their glorious return to the Sportsman, where they will be cracked open and enjoyed by the (no doubt) extremely thirsty participants (and anyone else who happens to be around!).

“We are delighted to be joining up with our local brewer, Magic Rock, to help celebrate this landmark year with a tough challenge. We work closely with many local & independent brewers and so we decided that it would be great to celebrate the pub’s birthday by doing something special with our brewing neighbours at Magic Rock.”
Will you join us on the Yorkshire 3 Pints Challenge?
We’re sending 3 teams on the challenge, which will take place on 9th April. They will include staff from The Sportsman/Beerhouses family, and Magic Rock, but we’re also keen for customers and friends to join in as well so we can raise as much for Project Youth Cancer as possible. So, are you in? You don’t have to do all Three Peaks and you don’t have to carry the cask (though you can do both if you want to). Contact sportsman@beerhouses.co.uk for more information.
Can you help us raise £5000?
If you want to be a part of this great endeavour but don’t fancy all the walking and beer carrying, you can make a great contribution by donating. We are really hoping to raise £5000 so that we can make a big difference to everyone that Project Youth Cancer supports.
Ryan is even donating all his tips!
You can make a donation via our fundraising page www.justgiving.com/page/yorkshire3pints or in The Sportsman.
Keep up to date with progress via our socials or by popping in to The Sportsman to see how tired Ryan looks as he trains for the big day!
