The greatest food event to hit Greater Manchester makes a long awaited comeback

Everyone loves a crisp butty, right? Back in 2022, Stalybridge Buffet Bar captured diners’ imaginations with a menu dedicated to the mighty crisp butty and created a phenomenon. A simple menu of crisps and maize snacks, served up in thick white bread with lashings of butter, went viral.

It was billed as ‘The event you didn’t know you wanted but glad is happening’ when the classic butties were pimped up for a very special pairing menu with Thornbridge Brewery. The two-day beer & butty pairing went down a storm as industry experts and lifestyle social media influencers live streaming the tasting experience, mixed with the good folks of Stalybridge to enjoy combos such as the Philly Cheese Steak (Roysters, Quavers + Philadelphia) and Hot & Spicy (Nik Naks, Jalapeno crisps + Jaipur hot sauce) paired with some great beers. After such a high the Crisp Butty Menu was put to bed for a much-needed rest.

Just as with crisps themselves, one is never enough.

Once the crumbs were cleared away and the influencers and paparazzi had left Stalybridge, the Buffet Bar thought the Crisp Butty Pop Up had checked out, however you have to give the people what they want. In May 2024, X user @bathedaily posted a flashback picture of the menu from that halcyon time. Some 76k views, nigh on 500 likes, and 100 shares later there were people demanding a triumphant return of this elusive taste sensation phenomenon.

So, for one day only, the Crisp Butty Pairing menu returns – taking place on Thursday June 27th.

We go again.

Barry Shaw, Operations Manager for the pub and creator, some might say innovator, of the menu said “The crisp butty menu idea really started off as a joke on social media but became so popular that we decided to turn it into a reality. When we did the pairing event in January 2022 it just went off the scale with the interest, it was being live streamed online and videos were popping up all over social media. People travelled to Stalybridge from miles around to be part of something very special. However, after the craziness died down, we decided to leave it as was it was intended.

That was until a throwback picture resurfaced on X and the interest of a return was expressed very clearly. This time, we have devised a completely brand-new menu that will feature 6 more combo crisp butties that have been created to pair perfectly with the beer styles that this renowned real ale pub sells. Crips lovers are strongly advised to book their space to avoid disappointment for this special one-off menu”

What you can expect

Head Crisp Chef, Barry (pictured above), has, once again, knocked it out of the park with his new menu, offering something for everyone, whether seeking something comfortingly familiar, or tantalizingly daring. There will be vegan and gluten-free options and even a 6-dish tasting menu for those who just can’t choose.

Bookings are being taken by the pub over social media (Facebook, Instagram, X) or by calling them on 0161 303 0007.
