What can we say about Stalybridge Buffet Bar? Is it a pub? Is it a museum? Is it a resting place for weary travellers passing through the railway station? Of course, it’s all of these things and more.
It’s one of the few remaining original Victorian buffet bars and still boasts a marble bar top. Fun fact: the local Environmental Health department actually insisted the bar should be ripped out and replaced with Formica for hygiene reasons back in the ‘70s but were duly overwhelmed by the indignant response from the owners and locals and the (perfectly hygienic) marble bar was given a reprieve and lives on to this day!
In fact, there wouldn’t be a West Riding without a Stalybridge Buffet Bar. Mike Field was inspired to create a railway pub at Dewsbury because he had spent so much time at the Buffet Bar as a student, and the whole project was something of a homage to it. We originally wanted to bring the Buffet Bar into the Beerhouses family in 1996 but lost out to John Hesketh. John and Mike stayed in touch over the years and when John, sadly, became seriously ill, he expressed his wishes that Mike should take it on after his death, which he did in 2012. There is definite poetry in this story for us that we were able to bring the two pubs together and ‘book end’ the Ale Trail line in this way.
Of course, being a Beerhouses pub, it has substance as well as style, with a great choice of cask ale on the bar. It has featured continuously in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide since 1999 and won many awards over the years. Just minutes out of Manchester on the train, we passionately believe that we can match any beer you’ll find in the city for quality – at town prices of course!

Food at The Stalybridge
We offer a range of bar snacks, including hot pork scratchings, crisps, and nuts. In fact, we have become quite famous for our Crisp Butty Pairing Event, where we create delicious crisp combos and pair them with the perfect pint, which we host periodically. In autumn and winter, we offer winter warmers such as corned beef hash, pie & peas, and Stalybridge speciality hot black peas, to warm your cockles in the colder months!
Look out for pop up food events on our socials when selected food vendors bring their wares to the beer garden.

The Latest from The Stalybridge Buffet Bar
It’s our birthday and we’ll rebrand if we want to!
To celebrate 10 years as a business, we’ve undergone a bit of a visual transformation! We have a new brand and a new website, but we’re still the same Beerhouses and we still believe in ‘proper pubs’!
City Beers Town Prices
You don’t have to pay city prices to get city quality beer. Stalybridge Buffet Bar is just minutes outside of Manchester and part of the Original Ale Trail!
Stalybridge Buffet Bar to sponsor the Independent Salford Beer Festival
We have news of a beer festival – but it’s not one of ours! Barry explains why Stalybridge Buffet Bar is sponsoring somebody else’s beer festival and why you should go…
So our good friends over at West Riding Beerhouse have challenged us to a Beer Battle.
In April (17th / 18th) they will chose half our beer line up and we'll chose half their beer line-up and leave it up to you for who has the best choice in beers.
Us or them, pretty simple really - so please come, try all the beers, decide we have a better choice, vote for us and then we win and can gloat over social media & at the managers meeting.
